I’ve heard it said that the losers from Microsoft having to provide a choice of browsers on new installations of Windows 7 in Europe will most likely be Microsoft themselves. I’m not convinced. I’ve been taking a look at Andy Clarke’s new solution to the old Internet Explorer 6 problem – using one universal CSS file for all sites
(with ‘a little branding here, or a touch of customization there’) – and I’ve decided I don’t really like it. I don’t like it because it serves web designers and developers, rather than the right people – clients and users. And because I think it will promote laziness when it comes to testing sites in IE6, which – like it or not – will most likely be around for a while yet. Conditional comments, combined with some browser-specific CSS, are a great way to get your website’s design & layout working in the various versions of Internet Explorer. But be careful, browser version targeting can soon have you and your website’s layout in knots unless you know exactly which browser(s) you want to target, and what CSS hacks to use.
